How to choose a custom tattoo artist

Choosing the right tattoo artist can be difficult. There are so many factors to consider, and it's hard to know what to look for. You need someone that is skilled at their craft but also has the personality and experience you're looking for in a tattoo artist. here are some important factors to consider when choosing your next custom tattoo project's artist!

Imagination and Creativity

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a custom tattoo artist is their imagination and creativity. You want someone that can take your ideas and run with them, creating a design that is truly unique to you. Ask to see examples of their previous work - do they have a style that you like? Most artists specialize in certain styles and most times will tell you if what you are looking for is not what they specialize in.

Carefully consider the type of styles you want to work with. You don't have to have an exact idea, but having a general sense of what style and genre are important. Look at artists' galleries on their website or Instagram page.

Communication and Professionalism

Another important factor when choosing your next tattoo artist is communication and professionalism

. You want someone that you can trust with an artistic vision as personal as a tattoo project! Consider emailing or messaging them ahead of time with a few questions or ideas as most custom artists book out ahead of time. Make sure you feel comfortable around them before committing to any projects.

Experience and Honesty

Consider your tattoo artist's experience and honesty when choosing a custom tattoo project. You want to be sure that they are capable of delivering on their promises before you commit to anything! Most artists will have an extensive portfolio showcasing previous projects. If possible talk to past customers about the quality and their experience.

The Tattoo Studio

Tattoo studios should be clean and sterile. A studio and all equipment should be autoclaved, disposable or thoroughly cleaned between clients.

See your artist's studio before booking any appointments to ensure that you're comfortable with the arrangement and environment of their work space. Personal hygiene is another important factor when choosing a tattoo artist. Tattoo artists are required by law to wear gloves during all stages of their project and should be licensed by the state and strictly follow all Board of Health guidelines.

Choosing an artist is both a leap of faith and also a culmination of smart research. It's both exciting and scary all at once! I usually try to tell my clients that they need to go with their gut feeling after the above steps are taken. If they check all the above boxes but you still are feeling uncertain, My best advice is to keep looking.

Covid-19 temporary closing

Eternal Alchemy tattoo will be closed due to the covid-19 quarantine until at least May 4th or until the non-essential business ban is lifted.

Im sure everyone by now is aware of the of non-essential business closings not only here in New Hampshire but all over the country. I just want you all to know that even though i’m really disappointed not to be able to tattoo for the entire month of April, I am very concerned about the health of our community and believe this is the right and responsible decision. I never though I would see a pandemic occur with such a devastating toll in my lifetime…..but here we are. My plan is to hunker down for however long it takes to weather this storm and get rolling as soon as possible back to work. In the meantime, I am producing LOTS of new art, reviving my website, and learning some new skills. Im also trying to figure a way to be helpful to my community and give back.

To everyone who had an April appointment with me , I’m planning to work some extra hours as I can to accommodate those people in a timely fashion. Everyone who has appointments post May 4th, no need to do anything as you will not be affected. I do ask however, if you have a May/June appointment to please cancel asap if you don’t think you can keep it so I can fit in April’s people. as always if you have any questions email me at heather@eternalalchemytattoo.com.

I want all of my clients to know how much I truly appreciate you! I wish all of you health and safety though this strange time. If any of you is in need, please reach out and I will help as I can, you are all my community and we are in these uncharted waters together.

How to begin?

I’ve always wanted to start a blog. I suppose I’ve always wanted to share experiences and knowledge with others about the world of tattoo art. Its my true love and my entire life purpose.

What has held me back however is……..I am not a great (or even good) writer. I have trouble organizing my thoughts, and my spelling and grammar sucks! I’m usually the one who punctuates and structures sentences wrong so I go misunderstood and gets reprimanded by the “grammar police”. I have a masters degree in sculpture and drawing and almost did not receive my degree because I had to rewrite my thesis THREE times before being allowed to graduate……..and it was short, real short……..and I even needed help in writing that.

so here I am, I’m going to try it. Bear with me as I inevitably will make spelling and grammatical errors. I will try my best to convey my content.

In the meantime, ill be taking articles submissions from you all. If I choose to add an article here Ill give you a $50 credit on your account toward your next tattoo with me. I would also love to answer questions here on my blog site from you as well.

All submissions go to heather@eternalalchemytattoo.com

Thank you all and I’m truly looking forward to reading everyone’s submissions!
